Final 2011 Quality Standings

After final Week 17 in the NFL we have 12 teams that finished the season with winning records:
Green Bay Packers (15-1)
New England Patriots (13-3)
San Francisco 49ers (13-3)
New Orleans Saints (13-3)
Baltimore Ravens (12-4)
Pittsburgh Steelers (12-4)
Houston Texans (10-6)
Atlanta Falcons (10-6)
Detroit Lions (10-6)
New York Giants (9-7)
Cincinnati Bengals (9-7)
Tennessee Titans (9-7)

All of the above teams are also playoff teams, except Tennessee Titans. Denver Broncos are the only team in the playoffs without winning record, they finished the season with 8-8 record. Here’s a table of so-called Quality Standings in which teams are classified based on games they’ve played only against opponents with winning record, teams in blue (NFC) and red (AFC) are playoff teams:

A few observations from the Quality standings above:

– Cleveland, Minnesota, Miami, New York Jets and New England are teams without a win against ‘quality’ teams

– Baltimore and New Orleans have the most wins against ‘quality’ teams, both teams ended with 6-1 record, the Packers hold the perfect record in Quality Standings with 5-0

– Indianapolis is a team with most games played against ‘quality’ teams, they finished with a 2-8 record, New England Patriots have played the fewest games against ‘quality’ teams

– teams in AFC East division have the fewest wins against ‘quality’ teams (1), teams in AFC North (11) and NFC North (11) have the most wins

-New England is the only playoff team without a single win against ‘quality’ teams.

I also put up a table of teams’ records against playoff teams (teams in blue (NFC) and red (AFC) are playoff teams):

  1. The Ravens went 6-0 against playoff teams, not 5-1 as you indicate. (2 wins each against Pittsburg and Cincinatti, and wins against Houston and San Francisco. They didn’t play NE, Den or any other NFC playoff teams.
